DUAL DRIVE SUPPORT
The 8051A operates in a MASTER SLAVE relationship. This enables the 8051A to
be daisy-chained with another IDE drive.(i.e. 7080A,7040A,or another 8051A)
1: Jumpering J4.1 to J4.2 causes the 8051A to operate in the SLAVE role.
2: Jumpering J4.5 to J4.6 causes the 8051A to operate in the MASTER role.
3: Jumpering J4.3 to J4.4 This allows the 8051A to be compatable with
some BIOS versions that cannot support 1:1 interleave.This jumper should
not be installed under normal conditions.
4: Jumper J4.7 to J4.8 is not used and should not be installed.
5: Jumpering J4.9 to J4.10 enables the I/O ready signal onto the
interface connector, pin 27.

In order to set your 3425 drive to oprate as drive C: or as D:
You need to locate the 8 pin dip switch located on the back of
the PCB. The proper settings ars as follows...
1) DRIVE C: PINS 1-4 ON, 5,6, AND 7 OFF, AND 8 ON
2) DRIVE D: PINS 1-4 ON 5 AND 6 OFF, 7 ON , AND 8 OFF
NOTE: IF YOU ARE USING A TWISTED CABLE THEN YOU NEED TO SET YOUR
DRIVE UP AS D: (SEE ST506 CABLING)

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE:
1) Remove the PS-2 system's cover (Refer to the IBM PS-2 Quick Reference
Guide).
2) Before installing a 3130E in the PS-2 system, verify that the ESDI
controller 071 is included in the system.

3) The slider rails must be attached to the disk drive before
installation into the PS-2 system.
4) When installing the 3130E as a first or second drive (using the original
34-pin control cable) the drive select jumper at location J15 on the
drive must be set to position 2. (Refer to the 3130E Product Manual)
5) If there will be two drives in the system make sure to remove the
terminating resistors from the drive connected to the middle of the
34-pin control cable. (On the 3130E these are RP4 and RP17, refer to
the 3130E Product Manual)
6) Connect the power cable from the available system power connector
to the power connector on the 3130E at location J3. (Refer to the
IBM PS-2 Quick Reference Guide, Section "Installing a Fixed Disk
Drive")
7) Connect the 20-pin data cable to location J2 on the 3130E with the
striped edge towards the notch in the edge-card connector. Connect
the other end of the cable to the proper 20-pin port on the
071 controller making sure to align pin 1. The striped edge of the

cable indicates pin 1. (Refer to the IBM PS-2 Quick Reference Guide,
Section "Installing a Fixed Disk Drive")
8) If the 3130E will be installed as the only drive in the system connect
the drive to the connector at the end of the 34-pin control cable. If
the drive will be installed as a second drive connect it to the
available connector. (Make sure to align the striped edge of the cable
to the notch in the edge-card connector) (Refer to the IBM PS-2 Quick
Reference Guide, Section "Installing a Fixed Disk Drive")

9) Reinstall the system cover. (Refer to the IBM PS-2 Quick Reference
Guide)
10) Power the system up.
11) Insert the DOS diskette in the A: drive to Boot the system.
12) If a 10490 or 10491 error occurs press <F1> to continue.
14) Replace the DOS diskette with the PS-2 Disk Manager diskette.
15) Print out the Disk Manager Reference files (located on the Disk
Manager disk) before continuing. Refer to these as you complete
the installation procedure.
16A) ** If you intend to use Disk Manager to partition the drive:
a) Type DM at the A: prompt.
b) Enter the drive number that you are installing.
c) Answer Y to "Initialize Drive?"
d) Enter the drive defect list. (included with the drive)
e) Disk Manager will now initialize the drive.
f) Pick your preferred partition sizes.
g) Follow the prompts to completion.
h) Make sure the root directory of C: contains the dmdrvr.bin file.
i) Make sure the config.sys includes a line "device=dmdrvr.bin".
16B) ** If you intend to use the DOS FDisk:
a) Type DM /m at the A: prompt.
b) Choose the Select Drive option, indicate which drive you are
installing. (1 or 2)
c) Enter the drive defect list. (included with the drive)
d) Choose the Initialize option.
e) Disk Manager will now initialize the drive.
f) Exit Disk Manager.
g) Use the DOS FDisk to partition the drive. (Refer to the DOS
Manual)
h) Use the DOS Format command to format the drive. (Refer to the DOS

be sure to remove the terminating resistor(s) from the hard disk drive

6) Connect the power cable from the available system power connector
to the power connector on the 9380E at location J3. (Refer to the
IBM PS-2 Quick Reference Guide, Section "Installing a Fixed Disk
Drive")
7) Connect the 20-pin data cable to location J2 on the 9380E with the
striped edge toward the notch in the edge-card connector. Connect
the other end of the cable to the proper 20-pin port on the

Run setup: The CMOS SETUP tables need to be checked to see that a hard drive
entry is included. With a "REAL" IBM (R) PC AT (R) use the IBM (R) diagnostic
diskette ot change the CMOS SETUP. With a compatable it may be possible to
access and change the SETUP information by by using keyboard code
(eg CTRL-ALT-ESC) The information on what to use should be in the system manual

Premium/386C, or the Premium/286

NOTE: DOS 4.0 MAY BE USED TO ESURE THAT YOU MAY HAVE ONE 40MB DOS
PARTITION.
PREPARATION
1. Unplug the computer and disconnect all of the cables

attached to the system.
2. Using a Phillips head screwdriver, remove and save the
screws from the back of the system unit.
3. Grip the back of the cover with both hands and gently lift
the cover from the system unit. Set the cover aside in a
protected area.
STANDARD INTERFACE BOARD (SIB) INSTALLATION
NOTE: THE "FIB" OR FLOPPY INTERFACE BOARD MAY ALSO BE USED.
THIS WOULD REQUIRE THAT THE FLOPPY CABLE (34 PIN) ALSO BE
CONECTED TO THE HOST ADAPTOR.
1. Using a Phillips head screwdriver, remove the screw from an
available full length (16 bit) expansion slot and pull out the
expansion slot cover from the computer chassis.
2. Unpack the Standard Interface Board (SIB) from its anti-
static bag. Hold the board by its sides only.

3. Carefully insert the SIB into the selected expansion slot.
Press down firmly until the card edge connector is fully seated
in the motherboard.
4. Re-install the screw into the SIB expansion slot cover to
secure it to the computer chassis.
AST SYTEM SETUP
1. Power up the computer and press the Control, Alternate and
Escape keys at the same time to enter the AST SETUP UTILITY.
2. On page 1 of the AST SETUP UTILITY, use the down arrow key
to move the cursor to FIXED DISK 1.
3. Use the right arrow key to select drive type 17.

4. Press the F10 function key to record the changes and press
F5 to confirm the update.
5. Insert a DOS 3.3 diskette into floppy drive A and press the
F1 function key to boot the system.
6. Enter the current date and time at the prompts.
PARTITIONING THE MAXTOR 8051A
The following partitining instructions will create a 32 MByte C:
drive and a 8 MByte D: drive on the 8051A hard disk drive using
Microsoft DOS version 3.30
1. At the A> prompt, type FDISK [enter].

8051A INSTALLATION
MAXTOR 8051A INSTALLATION
1. Carefully remove the 8051A from the protective anti-static bag.
2. Remove the FIB (floppy intreface board) or the SIB (standard interface
board) from the protective anti-static bag.
3. Gently install the interface board into the desired expantion slot.
SEAT FIRMLY.
4. Locate pin one on the 8051A and connect the striped side of the 40 pin

controll cable to the pin one designated side of the 8051A.
5. Connect the other end of this cable to the FIB or SIB board making
sure that pin one is lined up correctly.
NOTE: If you are using the FIB board then you must also connect the
Floppy drive to the interface card at this time. (remember,pin one to pin one)
6. Connect the power pig tail (from your power supply) to the 8051A.
EPSON SYSTEM SETUP
1. Install the Epson reference diskette into floppy drive A and
power-up the system.
2. From the main menu use the arrow keys to select 1 for setup. In
the following menu, select Hard Disk Drive using the up/down arrow keys
then press [enter].
3. Select the Change Settings option, then select a drive type 17.

4. Now press [enter] to return to the previous menu. Select the Save
Settings option and press [enter]. Select Exit and Save from the menu.
The system will now reboot.
MS-DOS 4.01 SETUP
The following instructions will create one 41 MByte partition C on
the 8051A hard drive and high-level format the partition using
Microsoft/Epson DOS Version 4.01 FDISK and FORMAT commands.
MS-DOS 4.01 offers an alternative hard disk preparation program that
executes from the Select Program. If you prefer this method, please
refer to the MS-DOS User Manual for guidance.
PARTITIONING THE 8051A
1. Insert the Microsoft/Epson DOS 4.01 Install diskette into floppy
drive A and re-boot the system. Press the Escape key to reach the A
prompt, skipping the Select program.
2. At the A prompt, type FDISK [enter].

Application:
Installing a M8051A disk drive (Microcode 3.71) into a
Compaq deskpro 386/20 using Compaq DOS 3.31
Materials:
8051A disk drive
5.25" mounting bracket assembly
40 pin control/data ribbon cable
4 pin power cable
Compaq style slider rails and screws
Phillips head screws
Flat head screwdriver
STEPS:
1. Disconnect the power cord and move the system to a static
free work area.

2. Using a flathead screwdriver, remove the four screws from
the back of the computer system. Slide the cover forward and lift
it off. Set the cover and screws aside in a protected area.
3. Touch the power supply case inside the computer to discharge
any static electricity.
4. Carefully install the Maxtor 8051A into your machine following your
Compaq owners manual.
5. Replace the computoer top cover and re-install the four
screws.
6. Insert the Compaq Advanced Diagnostics diskette into the
floppy disk drive and power up the computer system.
7. The monitor will display a menu. At the program number
prompt.
8. Type 1 [enter]
9. Press the [enter] key when prompted.

10. Monitor will display: System Configuration Summary
- IF the primary controller indicates that both drives
are not installed, press the PAGE DOWN key to display the
fixed disk type.
11. Press the F4 function key to change the drive type. At the
Change Configuration menu, use the arrow keys to highlight Fixed
Disk Drive options and [enter]
12. At the Fixed Disk Drive menu, the monitor will display:
(Primary Controller), Fixed Disk 11 [ ]
13. Type 17 [enter]
14. Monitor will display: Fixed Disk 2 [ ]
15. Type 0 [enter]
16. Press the Escape key to return to the System Configuration
menu. The monitor should display:
Fixed Disk Controller Type 17 (40 Megabytes)
if it does not, repeat steps 35-39

17. Press the F3 function key to exit.
18. Use the arrow keys to highlight Exit Setup and [enter].
19. The monitor will display the installed devices. Verify that
the Primary Controller indicates a type 17 for Fixed Disk 1 and
type Y [enter].
20. Press the F3 function key. Monitor will display:Reset System
21. Insert the Compaq DOS 3.31 System diskette into the top
floppy disk drive and [enter]. System will now reboot.
22. Set system date and time.
23. Type FDISK [enter].
24. Monitor will display:

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS FOR AT CLONES
MATERIALS REQUIRED:
1. Maxtor 8051A disk drive.
2. 40 pin IDE cable.
3. Maxtor AT host adaptor. (floppy or Standard)
4. DOS 3.3 or higher
NOTE: The 8051A has been low-level formatted at the factory
DO NOT LOW-LEVEL FORMAT.
INSTALLATION AND FORMATTING:
1. Remove the system top cover.(Make sure that you are working at a
static free work station)
2. Carefully remove the AT host adaptor from the protective package.
3. Place the AT host adaptor in the desired expantion slot. Make sure
that the card is firmly seated in the mother board.

4. Carefully remove the Maxtor 8051A from the protective static bag
make sure that you handle the drive by the edges so as not to touch
the PCBA.
NOTE: If you are installing the 8051A as the only drive in the system
then the only jumper that you should have installed should be on
J-4, 1 to 3 this has no effect but provides you with a spare for
duel drive installations.
5. Connect the 40 pin control cable from the 8051A to the AT host adaptor.
Make sure that you connect the colored edge of the cable to the
pin one side of the host adaptor and the pin one side of the 8051A.
6. Locate the 4 pin power pig tail in your system and connect it to your
8051A (This should be provided by your systems power suply.) make sure that
the connector is firmly attatched to the 8051A.
PARTITIONING:
1. Incert your DOS diskette into the A drive type: FDISK <CR>
2. You will then be presented with the FDISK menu. First you need to make
the initial DOS partition.(this is the default choice) Once you have done
this FDISK will ask you to make this DOS partition active.(once again this
is the default choice) Now the system will restart. Press any key when

ready.
NOTE: If you are using DOS 4.01 you can skip step 3 because you will
have used all 40MB's of the drive. DOS 3.3 can only make
a 32MB partition so you will have to create an extended DOS partition.
3. Now you will need to create an extended DOS partition. Type FDISK
<CR> then you will be presented with the FDISK menu. This time you
will create an extended DOS partition. (this is the default choice) once again
the system will restart.
FORMATTING:
1. You should still be at the "A>" now you should type: FORMAT C:/S
(Make sure that you make a space between FORMAT and C:/s)
now press <CR>. This will format, and make your C partition bootable.
2. If you have used the lower version of DOS (3.3) you will
need to format your "D" partition. To do this you type: FORMAT D:
(No "/S" this time because you already have a bootable partition.)
When your system is finished here then you will be able to boot
directly to your fixed disk drive.

1.) Install the drive with the stripe on the 40 pin cable facing the
power connector. Use the user definable BIOS type to set up the
drive with 981 Cyls., 10 Hds., and 17 Sectors. No pre-comp and
no Landing Zone. This will format to 81 MBytes.
NOTE: If a user definable drive type is not available the other
acceptable parameters are 1024 Cyls., 9 Hds., and 17 sectors.
This drive type will only format to 76.5 MBytes.
2.) Boot the computer with your DOS boot disk. (at least 3.3 or higher)
3.) Go into the "FDISK" program and set the partitions as required for your
application.
4.) High-Level Format your partitions i.e. "FORMAT C:/S". Repeat
this for each of the partitions created.
5.) The 7080A is now ready for use. This drive does not require nor do
we recomend a Low-Level Format.

COMMON PROBLEMS AND SOLUTIONS FOR MAXTOR DRIVES
Problem: When installing my drive I get an unrecoverable I/O error.
Solution: Generally,this error is caused by a loose or misadjusted
20 pin data cable. If this does not fix the problem then you should
swap out your cable.
Problem: The LED(light)on my drive is flashing a strange code.
Solution: This kind of flashing is called a binary error code.
This can mean one of many things,when this occurs if you have
a product manual you can look in the back of the manual and find
a list of these codes and their meanings.Remember a solid flash=1

Problem: When I boot up my system with my new drive installed I
get a 1790 error. Then the machine just hangs.
Solution: When you first install a HDD you will normally get some
kind of error this is normal. Generally you will notice that along
with the 1790 or 1791 error it will also say press F-1 to continue or
CRTL ALT ESC to run set up. If you press F-1 you will have to
wait up to 3 min. or so for the system to time out. Then you
may continue with your installation.If you choose to run setup
you will have to repeat this process.
Problem: When I install my drive I can't get the machine to
recognize the drive.
Solution: When the machine will not recognize the drive the first thing
that you should check is to see that the drive select is set properly.
On most ST506 and ESDI drives there is a drive select jumper or a
dip switch that may have to be set to get the drive to be recognized.
Also on duel(Daisy chained) installations you may have to remove a
terminating resistor to get the drives to be recognized.
